Workshop Description

  • Borehole geophysics is, and will continue to be, a highly effective tool for water resource/water supply applications and is frequently applied in environmental investigations where, for example, sites must be evaluated to determine the distribution of contaminants. A previous one-day workshop in October 2016 was a rapid overview of borehole geophysical logging. Based on valuable input from workshop attendees we are now offering a more in-depth basic two-day short workshop to enhance basic knowledge and skills.

  • This workshop will provide a solid introduction on key geophysical tools/logs, their measurements, along with their limitations and pitfalls, and well log interpretation principles. We will cover basic applications of borehole geophysics for designing and completing water production wells, assessing hydrologic conditions and properties, characterizing environmental conditions, conducting basin and hydrostratigraphic analysis, and rehabilitating or abandoning water production wells. In addition, we will discuss basic principles of log quality control and the main work products one should receive from a logging program and contractor (logging company).

  • Further, this workshop will demonstrate important applications of borehole geophysics which include identifying water producing zones in well boreholes; evaluating the thickness and distribution of transmissive units; identifying fractures; evaluating relative water yield and water quality; planning well systems; and planning and evaluating well workovers/rehabilitation and abandonment. Interesting examples of geophysical logs relative to the listed applications and topics covered will be discussed, and will provide useful insight to project development and use of those logs.

  • The instructors will provide and emphasize “hands-on” logging project examples as part of this workshop. This includes exercises to apply newly-learned information and enhance the learning environment. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own borehole geophysical logs they have questions about, to discuss them with the instructors and workshop attendees. This workshop also provides an effective opportunity for attendees to network with other water resource professionals.

Introductory

Recommended Background Knowledge

This is an introductory workshop. A background in drilling and logging operations isn't necessary, but would be helpful. Participants should have a general understanding of geology and hydrogeology.
